An exclusive interview with Robert Janeson, Founder of Janeson Media. He is an entrepreneur from Nairobi, Kenya. He owns a company by the name Janeson Ideas which comprises of brands like Janeson Recordings, Janeson Media and Janeson Films.

Tell us about yourself?

I am just a person who is hungry to make a positive change not only to the people around me but to the world in general.

How did you get your idea or concept for the business?

It’s hard to explain this but I will try to trace; for the record label “Janeson Recordings”, I was just going through a transition from a music artist to a label founder and executive. I am just like many kids who start developing music interests in their early age.

I joined digital marketing by what I can call a mistake though it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. I was worked with a Kenyan government body back in 2011, but all through I felt that I needed something that challenges me. I met a friend who was much into programming and he introduced me to the internet world. After months of training and working as a junior digital marketer in SEO and digital marketing agencies I founded Janeson Media.

I still get more ideas and we are always open to invest in various lines of business. I am still looking forward to potentially investing in finance and property developments.

How much potential market share can you achieve in next 3 years?

I have ventured in a few industries and hoping that it won’t end up as a “Jack of All Trades” concept. Our record label “Janeson Recordings” hoping to achieve over market 20% share in East Africa. Our goal is to have Janeson Recordings and others.

Our digital marketing brand “Janeson Media” is a very saturated market might still continue to not being widely noticed as far as market share is concerned but we have positioned it to be very instrumental in building our other brands.

What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read?

What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?

I don’t know of my worst purchase but i can tell you what i think was my best purchase. I bought some lottery cards for 30 dollars equivalent to KSh 3000 in the streets of one town here in Kenya like 10 years ago. I was very broke, desperate, even though i had hope for better future. I didn’t win anything, I learned that it was just a mind game.

I visited the place for 3 days consecutively and was able to decode that they were completely con artists. This scenario helped to learn a lot that and I have found it instrumental in protecting me from a bad business decision and smelling con artists.

What takes up too much of your time?

Having an argument with myself. In most cases I am trying to think about getting some contract, thinking about how I can grow as a person and the business. Even what I am hands-on working on something, thoughts on how I can realize more growth in me, my team and the business in general always interrupts the process.

What three pieces of advice would you give to college students/new startup business owners who want to become entrepreneurs?

  1. Work Hard, Work Fast & Work Smart – Robert Janeson
  2. The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. – Alvin Toffler
  3. Generous and authentic leadership will always defeat the selfish efforts of someone doing it just because she can. – Seth Godin

Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?

A huge list! Each season seems like new names on lists coming up. From local unpopular people to world known superstars, innovators etc. Some people on my list include;

– Bill Gates
– Elon Musk
– Future The Rapper
– Ronaldinho
– Bob Marley “the Late”
– Henry Ford “the Late” and the list is endless.

Tell us about something you are proud of – about your greatest challenge.

The best thing about challenges is that they normally come to sharpen your mind. I can’t even tell what has been my challenge so far or I am yet to face the greatest challenge of my career. But, yes, challenges are always coming and I always survive and I am confident I will always survive in the upcoming challenges.
