An interview with Adam Marshal, President & CEO of Somehowsummmer.com. Who is making a great impact on his life and expanding business.
Tell us about yourself?
Well, I am an average joe that knew deep down inside me that there had to be a better way than struggling pay cheque to pay cheque. When a friend led me onto Shopify. I was very intrigued by the idea of e-commerce and drop shipping. 3 months later here I am finally finished designing and collaborating to make the most efficient design possible. And to separate myself from the rest we are the only store on Shopify offering 10% of profits to a charity chosen monthly by our followers so watch our social media for the opportunity to nominate your charity!
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
I came up with the concept when I was actually out at the lake with my 3-year-old daughter. It hit me like a ton of bricks! Right in the face! Hey, we can separate Somehow Summer from every other store. If we not only offer 10% to charity but let the followers nominate their own charities to top off the cake.
How much potential market share can you achieve in the next 3 years?
Everyone’s unique possibilities are limitless. It all depends on how much work Time Attention and Energy you are willing to devote to well you, your business, and your mindset. I would also like to give a special shout out to my partners Matthew Burgess and Mark Bowman for their continued efforts in pushing me to be that 1 % better every day!!
What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read?
The Compound Effect. Is by far my favorite book I have read it over and over, and still continue to learn more every time i read it.
What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?
The best investment I would say was investing in myself enough to believe in myself enough to create a store that can compete with the best even though i had no idea where to start. You just have to take the first step and believe. And then the rest will fall into place. As long as you truly believe.
The worst was I hired a “PRO” freelancer to design a landing page for the business. 5 days later he tells me he cannot complete the work it is impossible. Let me tell you I managed to learn not only how to build my own landing page now but for the future as well and it cost me nothing and I was able to implement my design within hours…
What takes up too much of your time?
Working a 9-5 job takes up far to much of my time. Within a few months, I will be able to say I no longer need this position it is costing me money to be here.
What three pieces of advice would you give to college students/new startup business owners who want to become entrepreneurs?
- Being your own boss is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes your complete time, energy, and attention.
- Be prepared to face the ups and downs. The highs and the lows
- You will never succeed in your first attempt no matter what you try, walking, talking, crawling. It’s when you dig deep inside yourself and find the perseverance to push above and beyond what most saw “possible” or (push yourself beyond “limiting beliefs”) that you can truly say I am an entrepreneur. I am a Leader. I am unique. I am empowering the future.
Tell us about something you are proud of – about your greatest challenge.
I am very resilient throughout the process of setting up not just Shopify but all the social media accounts to go with it. On top of communicating your vision to others such as web developers etc… is a daunting task in its own. And I can see why many people give up half way thru the process. I am here to tell you do not give up, you can learn to do it just like I did. I had no background in “online Entrepreneurship, I just took the first step and began to learn from there.
