Tell us about yourself?
My name is Chris Lee, and I’m a personal trainer in Buffalo, New York. Staying fit has always been incredibly important to me. I grew up practicing martial arts and training for competitions, specifically in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. When I went to college, I decided to focus on exercise science and sports performance so I could continue to hone my expertise and learn how to train more effectively. After I graduated from college, I started working at a large commercial gym, and I got a lot of invaluable experience working with clients one-on-one. I began to realize that most people were just focused on losing weight quickly instead of increasing their overall athletic ability. The gym I worked at was also a very metrics-driven environment in that they wanted me to work with as many clients as I could rather than focusing on the quality. I decided to start my training business, so I could help clients build strength, athleticism, and agility. The workouts I design focus on functionality and explosiveness, so clients do get leaner, but more importantly, they perform like an athlete.
What makes you different than other professionals in your field?
There are a lot of personal trainers out there, but in my opinion, many of them focus on what’s trendy instead of basing their fitness or nutrition advice on scientific research. I am very grateful for the training and experience I had in college, where I learned the science behind athletic training. I think that is what really sets me apart – all of my training programs are based on scientific literature.
What was the most important part of your professional journey?
While growing up, practicing martial arts helped me develop self-discipline and confidence, which has been the foundation for everything I have accomplished since then. I also really developed a love for fitness and increasing my strength, power, and mobility during that time, so I would say that has been the most important part of my professional journey.
What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?
One of the best purchases I have ever made is my iPad. I bring it to every training session so I can record how much weight my clients are lifting, how many reps they can complete, how fast they can run a certain distance, how flexible they are, etc., so I can measure how clients are progressing, and they can see their results too.
I’ve purchased a lot of exercise equipment throughout my career, and some have completely failed, broken, or fallen apart. I recommend that everyone focus on simple, quality equipment, and not trends!
What takes up too much of your time?
Administrative work – hands down. I spend way too much time with paperwork and other administrative duties involved in running a business.
Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?
Muhammad Ali is a hero of mine. What he was able to achieve in his life, both inside and outside the ring is incredibly impressive.
What drives you to keep going when it’s really tough?
I am intrinsically driven, so when things get tough, I center myself and focus on my goals. I am also a big believer in meditation – it’s critical for my mental health and focus. I spend 30 minutes every morning on breathing exercises and 30 minutes in the evening meditating. This helps me continue to bring positive energy to every training session.
