The Cape Lookout National Seashore reported the death of a man in his mid-40s in a news release on Monday, May 29, 2023, but did not disclose the name of the victim.

Nate Toering, the chief of interpretation and education for the Cape Lookout National Seashore, reported that a wave near the Shackleford Banks threw Morgan and two other individuals into the ocean after the boat they had rented hit it.

Despite the 7-to-9-foot wave swells and sporadic rain, the passengers managed to swim to the Shackleford Banks, but Morgan collapsed on the shoreline.

Park rangers arrived by boat and ATV within 15 minutes while his companions attempted to perform CPR, but they were unable to revive Morgan.
