Tell us about yourself ?

Hey! My name is Farah Fonseca. I’m 24 years old and bit the bullet by going self-employed when I was 19, I started my business Fonseca Fitness. It is a female only boot camp business, running over 15 classes per week with over 80 regular women attending sessions on a monthly basis. I also compete in Strong Woman and currently hold the titles for 2 x England’s Strongest Woman, 1 x Britain’s Strongest Woman and 5th u63kg in the World.

How did you get your idea or concept for the business?

I’ve always been in the fitness industry, but originally I started the boot camp with a colleague at the gym I was working at. It wasn’t women only when we started but somehow it was just what we attracted to. After a couple of months, that colleague decided not to continue with it as he did not live locally. After that, I decided to change the name to Fonseca Fitness and that’s when things started to blossom.

What’s your company’s goals?

Firstly, it is about helping as many women as possible achieve their goals. Not only their fitness and aesthetic goals but also health wise too. Getting women have a healthy relationship with their bodies, their food and also their lives in general.

As a company it is to reach and maintain on a monthly basis 100 women attending classes and this year we specifically want to run our very first fitness retreat!

How do you market your business? How are people aware of your business?

I attend a couple of festivals/Fayre’s a couple of times a year and put up a stand, occasionally I leaflet where possible door to door – and also having a big truck with the logo on helps too!

I use Instagram a lot for marketing – also facebook, but not quite as much now their regulations are changing. Word of mouth is also really important to me so getting our ladies to tell their friends, checking in on facebook etc – makes a massive difference to numbers.

I also have a newsletter subscription, so on a weekly basis will send out information about classes and other topics!

What made you choose this type of business?

Truthfully, it was something I fell into! I initially started out as only being a Personal Trainer, then it was my colleague who actually suggested doing the bootcamps. When I realised things could really start to flourish with it and started getting ladies paying for the monthly service, it was then that it was when I wanted to make it full time. Over the years that is exactly what I’ve done and 5 years later it couldn’t run any smoother!

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

I paid for a business mentor for the first 18 months of starting up Fonseca Fitness. If you can afford it then I honestly think this was the best thing you could do. Creating systems which have already be trialed and tested, preventing you from wasting any money and time and someone telling you exactly what works to get your business to where you want it to be.

If not, then just keep persevering! It is easy to think one day isn’t going well, so you can easily tell yourself that the whole system is failing, but it’s not! People will keep coming back to you, you just need to be confident with yourself and the systems you’ve put in place!

Why do your customers select you over your competitors?

My ladies come to me because they trust me and now people will come to be as a referral from another fitness professional in the area – which is lovely! They also love the fact that it is female only, which is a big draw to going to a fitness class!

If you had your time again, what would you do differently?

There’s not much at the moment in my business that I regret or wish I had done differently, as you quickly learn from each experience. Perhaps the confidence to have push the business from the start more, rather than relying on Personal Training as well (financially). For as soon as I stopped that and put all my effort into the boot camps it really was able to expand. So perhaps doing that from an earlier point!
