Fyre Festival: The Biggest Fraud Of Its Time

This article is about Fyre, a musical festival held in 2017 and became the greatest fraud of Its time.

What Is the Fyre Festival?

Fyre Festival was a defrauding “luxury” music festival organized by Billy McFarland, CEO of Fyre Media Inc, and rapper Ja Rule. It was established with the purpose of publicizing the company’s Fyre app for reserving music talent.

The event was heightened on Instagram by “social media influencers” such as Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin and Emily Ratajkowski, many of whom did not declare openly they had been hired to do this publicity. During the inaugural weekend of Fyre Festival, the event experienced issues relevant to safety, food, accommodation, medical facilities and artist connections, which consequently postponed the festival indefinitely. Rather than luxury villas and gourmet meals for which attendees spent thousands of dollars and the organization of the festival showed them dreams, they got prepackaged sandwiches and FEMA tents as their settlement.

In March 2018, McFarland pleaded guilty to the count of wire fraud to cheat investors and ticket holders, and a second count to cheat a ticket dealer that happened while out on bail. In October 2018, McFarland was punished to six years in jail and ordered to relinquish US $26 million.

When Was the Fyre Festival?

The festival was planned to be organized on April 28 to 30 and May 5 to 7 in the year of 2017, on the Bahamian island.

Which Fyre Festival Documentary Is Better?

Both “Fyre” of Netflix and “Fyre Fraud” of Hulu are powerful documentaries and cover the topic from various angles. But if you wish to know a factual information behind-the-scenes look of what headed to the festival towards a disaster, then Netflix’s “Fyre” must be your choice.

In order to support our above statement, let’s have a comparison between “Fyre” and “Fyre Fraud”

1) The Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland, is in the Hulu documentary, but do not think anything disclosing:

“Fyre Fraud” is the exclusive one that paid McFarland for the interview on camera. However, do not expect much from him to disclose how things happened. In most of the footage, he is avoiding answers.

2) The Netflix documentary provides a deeper knowledge of inside the promo video that made Fyre Festival go viral:

Both documentaries cover the popular Fyre Festival promotional video that went viral But “Fyre” gave a lot more details. The B-roll of the shoot in the documentary provides an extraordinary knowledge of inside not just the making of the video, but how incapable McFarland and his team were for carrying out the festival.

3) Netflix provides more specific fact on the confusion of organizing the festival:

One of the things “Fyre Fraud” did not bother to provide details of what it was like to prepare for the festival in the Bahamas.

Whereas “Fyre,”, did a well prepared research on how unskilled they were for organizing a successful festival. This became sadder at the end of the documentary when several Bahamians confessed on camera that they were never being given money for their work.

4) Both documentaries shows McFarland’s venture after Fyre Festival that headed towards his arrest, but the Netflix documentary has real footage of it:

When McFarland was expecting punishment after pleading guilty to fraud for Fyre Festival, he was using another scam, named NYC VIP Access, in which he would give bogus tickets to events like the Met Gala, Coachella, Burning Man, and the Grammys.

Both documentaries talk about it, but “Fyre” collected footage of McFarland using the scam, encompassing one incident where he is feeding lines to the person making phone calls selling the “tickets.”

Why Did Fyre Festival Get Flopped?

There are many reasons for making the festival flop. So let’s just talk about the main points.

1. Lack Of Planning :

When it comes to organizing a big event, You need multiple plans for making it successful. Precisely, you require to answer those main questions:

  • How long does it take to get permission?
  • How do we get adequate supplies to this distant location?
  • What tariffs and taxes will we have to face on imported goods?
  • How will visitors check-in?

Once you have done with your answers, you will require a roadmap and assign a person for each task. It will not only lessen your burden but help you in keeping a check on everything.

2. Cannot handle the hype:

Fyre Festival carelessly targeted a culture where perceptions are more valuable than fact. The originators fantasized about an idea that they failed to deliver.

3. Lack of responsibility:

Fyre Festival was the concept of Billy McFarland and Ja Rule. It was supported by well-known investors like Carola Jain. The team at Jerry Media fed the marketing tycoon.

But who’s accountable for this loss?

If there had been a ton who took responsibility during the event, it is possible that a person would have called the whole thing off before it twisted into such a flop. If anyone was clearly in charge, they would have foreseen and predicted the alarming signs. They would have made some changes to not let it be a flop.

This is the information about the biggest flop event and some of the reasons that give you a lesson for your future. If you avoid those things it can make a big difference.
