It was established that the well-known American journalist Grant Wahl passed away in Qatar yesterday evening. The man, who was 48 years old, was reporting on the World Cup match between the Netherlands and Argentina when he passed out during the game.

The following is what the United States Soccer Federation has said in a statement: “The news that Grant Wahl has passed away has left the entire US Soccer family in a state of disbelief and mourning.

Grant was honored by FIFA and AIPS just a few days ago for contributing to the reporting on eight consecutive FIFA World Cups. During his career, he attended several FIFA Women’s World Cups and other international sporting events.

Who is Grant Wahl?

Grant Wahl was born in Mission, Kansas; Wahl graduated from Princeton University in 1996. While at Princeton, he covered the Tigers men’s soccer team, which has coached by Bob Bradley, who would coach the United States men’s soccer team a decade later.

Wahl fortified his position in the sports industry as one of the most renowned soccer reporters in the United States. He covered Major League Soccer, the National Women’s Soccer League, and the U.S. national teams. 

He worked his way up to become a senior writer at Sports Illustrated, covering numerous NCAA Tournaments, Olympics Games, and World Cups throughout his career.

Grant Wahl, an esteemed American sports journalist best known for his soccer reporting focused on storytelling and behind-the-scenes coverage of the rise of the sport in the United States, passed away at age 49 early Saturday morning in Qatar. 

He was in Qatar. Grant Wahl was best known for his soccer reporting. According to CBS News, Wahl passed out in the press box of Lusail Stadium while watching the quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

During the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar, Wahl served as an analyst for CBS Sports HQ. He also contributed guest columns to CBS Sports centered on the United States men’s national team. Additionally, he served as an editorial consultant for the soccer documentaries broadcast on Paramount.

Celine Gounder, an American medical doctor and medical Journalist specializing in infectious diseases and global health, was married to Grant Wahl during their time together in the United States. After initially meeting at Princeton University, the two went on to have a wedding in 2001. 

Dr. Celine Gounder is a filmmaker, internist, epidemiologist, and medical Journalist in addition to being a physician. Her areas of expertise include infectious diseases and international health.

His wife, Grounder, also tweeted the following: “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the support that I have received tonight from my husband, Grant Wahl’s soccer family, and so many other friends who have reached out to me. I am completely taken aback.”
