Tell us about yourself?
Janine is a passionate entrepreneur at heart, a lover of foods that are not only healthy but functional, convenient, simple, empowering and of course enjoyable. Because yes, you can have it all.
Originally from Germany, Janine’s gift for marketing & business strategy coupled with her food & nutrition knowledge, skill to build communities and drive to make a difference in the health of people’s lives, led her to step out as an entrepreneur.
Launching her first company in October 2011, she recognized a significant gap in the market for quality and functional health snacks. Proofing her concept to be a success, she recently launched her newest global adventure Gutsii. Offering a range of functional shakes with the world’s first prebiotic sugar-free chocolate to follow in a few months.
Janine now is a thought leader in this space. Educating consumers on health and wellbeing with the focus on simplicity, efficiency and cost-effective solutions easy to apply to their everyday busy schedules.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
My journey on nutrition and health started with the death of my grandfather in 2000 and the illnesses my mum, grandmother, as well as myself, were experiencing. I learned very quickly that food has a significant impact on our health. I embarked on a long journey learning all about diets, food types, the uniqueness of everyone’s body, its needs and the need for simple functional snack solutions that meets multiple dietary needs.
How much potential market share can you achieve in next 3 years?
Determining the percentage market share is challenging, as our new product range is a combination of health, supplements and fitness. Functional foods is a new and one of the fastest growing categories right now. We have high expectations globally and looking forward to the next 3 years to come.
What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read?
It’s not what you might think, none of those business books. The book that has had the biggest impact on my personal, as well as business life, is ‘Change your thoughts change your life’ from Dr. Wayne Dyer. It helped me focus, deepened understanding for my purpose, priorities my days, manage my personal as well as business relationships and to put life in perspective.
I’ve also always liked Gary Vaynerchuk. He says it bluntly and straightforward. This man doesn’t f$%k around. I appreciate people who get straight to the point and speak their truth.
What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?
My best purchase has been when I spent the only $1,000 I had in my bank account for ingredients invested in our first batch of Simply Raw bars.
The worst purchase I ever made was spending $30,000 on a marketing and rebrand exercise. I could have achieved the same with less than $5,000 and trusting the knowledge I already had.
What takes up too much of your time?
I used to spend too much time ensuring projects are being completed. It is critical to have a project manager in place to ensure projects are being completed in full on time. As a business owner, your time is better of investing in business strategy and efficient execution. Having a team of executing experts is one of the major keys to business success.
For most people, it’s the time they spend on administration and getting lost in a so seemingly never-ending rabbit hole of emails. I’m still guilty of that. To avoid that, start your day with a list of top 5 priorities and ensure those are done before you are getting distracted by emails and administration tasks.
What three pieces of advice would you give to college students/new startup business owners who want to become entrepreneurs?
- Try to grow your business organically without spending money on advertising etc. Focus on collaborations, PR, social media activities etc instead.
- Always know your numbers, you can’t grow a business without it.
- Do as much as possible and don’t be afraid to fail. Execution is your bread and butter.
Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?
Oprah Winfrey – she came from an abusive and traumatizing childhood, build a career in a man dominating the industry as a black woman. She has inspired and motivated more people in her lifetime than most people ever could. She’s spread love and faith throughout the world and touched the hearts of millions. She now is one of the most influential women alive. Oprah Winfrey is an inspiration and a living saint. Because of her, I believe that anything is possible.
Tell us about something you are proud of – about your greatest challenge.
I’m always one step ahead of market trends, it’s my superpower.
