An interview with Jared and Karina, Creators of Hang-O-Matic. A popular all-in-one picture hanging tool that measures, levels and marks the wall. They had many challenges launching their brand due to no support from family, friends or investors and ultimately they were faced with a decision of selling their Dream Home to self-fund their business. Today the Hang-O-Matic is in over 12,000 retail stores across SIX countries.
Tell us about yourself?
Jared and Karina have been featured on several Reality TV Shows: “on Bravo Network, Funded on “Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch” & ABC’s “Funderdome”. Jared appeared on QVC four Times in US & UK. A fond memory of hers was at a trade show: In a sea of buyers, 1 stood out as a must-contact – Home Depot. He must have been in a rush to meet up with someone, but that wouldn’t stop her. Thinking quickly, she made a dash in his direction wearing three-inch heels; noticed his name badge & called out his name. He responded, allowing her to share Hang-O-Matic.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
Jared was moving around a lot in College and decorating his walls, making way too many holes and the result was getting back-charged. Jared took apart several tools at his work and created a new tool that could level and make two perfect marks in seconds,
How much potential market share can you achieve in next 3 years?
We believe that every household can own the Hang-O-Matic which they would use to decorate apartments, houses, condo’s, college dormrooms, office’s and more.
What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read?
Enders Game 🙂
What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?
The best purchase was our first home. The worst purchase was Jeep Cheroke 2011.
What takes up too much of your time?
Social Media (a necessary evil)
What three pieces of advice would you give to college students/new startup business owners who want to become entrepreneurs?
Our advice is to have a network with everyone you can and learn from everyone you talk to. Do not throw away any contacts you receive and create a spreadsheet to store the email addresses for future need. Start creating video content.
Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?
Lee Oleg – Lilly Pets. He prints anything on pillows and became very successful in one year.
Tell us about something you are proud of – about your greatest challenge.
Our biggest challenge was getting the Hang-O-Matic into Target and Home Depot and we are proud that we were able to accomplish these milestones.
