Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is an uncommon neurological disorder marked by facial nerve paralysis (facial paralysis) and an ear or mouth rash.
You might not have heard about the disease RHS, but now that our favorite celebrity Justin Bieber has been affected, many people have started to speculate what this uncommon neurological disorder is.
It is said to be a rare disorder that affects the nerves in your face and results in facial paralysis. And directly affects your face and mouth just as Justin showed in his recent Instagram post.
The two most common example are Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and hearing loss
The cause of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a virus named varicella-zoster. This virus targets adults with diseases like chickenpox in children and shingles (herpes zoster) in adults.
In cases with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, the previously dormant (lethargic) varicella-zoster infection reactivates and spreads to the facial nerve.
Several distinct names in clinical writing have referred to this condition.
The condition is named after James Ramsay Hunt, a doctor who initially identified the disorder in 1907.
What Are The Common Signs & Symptoms Of RHS? How Is It Treated?
The Ramsay Hunt Syndrome’s (RHS) side effects differ from situation to situation.
Loss of motion (paralysis) of the facial nerve and a rash affecting the ear are common symptoms of those affected.
These two side effects don’t always occur at the same time. In most cases, only half of the face is affected.
According to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, adverse effects can include a severe rash inside the ear trench and outside the ear, sometimes spreading to the tongue and top of the mouth.
Individuals with the Syndrome may also experience dizziness or tinnitus (a ringing in the ear) as a result of the internal ear involvement in the Syndrome.
Ramsay Hunt Syndrome can also cause hearing loss in the affected face.
RHS causes weakness, leading to difficulty eating food, facial expressions, blinking eyes, or smiling.
The initial stage of treatment when Ramsay HuntSyndrome is examined involves Antivirals and steroids.
Antiviral medications such as acyclovir, famciclovir, corticosteroids, and prednisone are commonly used to treat Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.
Most experts agree that initiating antiviral medication no later than three days after the infection
appears to have the most benefit in terms of rapid recovery.
Despite treatment, a few levels of facial and hearing loss may sometimes become quite persistent.
However, further treatment of this Syndrome depends upon the side effect the person is facing.
The side effects can vary from person to person.
Which Age Category Does Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Affect The Most?
Ramsay Hunt’s condition affects both men and women.
According to one estimate, 5 out of every 100,000 people in the United States get Ramsay Hunt disorder yearly.
Few scientists believe that cases of Ramsay HuntSyndrome go unnoticed or are misdiagnosed, making it difficult to determine whether the problem occurs in everyone.
Regardless, most cases affect older adults, notably those over the age of 60. It’s fascinating to see how the Ramsay Hunt disorder affects children.
