The police barged inside the home to find it, though they noted no signs of a struggle inside the apartment. They found a decomposing body of Kevin in the bedroom.

However, his phone was missing, and neighbors reported that his vehicle was missing from his driveway. 

The officers found proof that a woman had been inside the crime spot from the undergarments recovered from the house.

As the police began to look into Kevin’s personal life, they quickly discovered that he had been dating a long string of women. 

Later, his landlord stated to have seen a steady stream of women arriving and leaving Kevin’s apartment. 

The officer found Kevin’s missing vehicle with the assistance of the GPS installed inside the car by the automobile company. They recovered Kevin’s smashed phone inside the car.

The officers understood that the killer did not want law enforcement to get Kevin’s phone as it could lead the police toward them. 

The case was passed over to the Cold Case Division of the Houston Police Department in July 2019.

Later, digital forensic technology evolved, and the investigators re-submitted Kevin’s phone to the forensic analysts, which helped the authorities download texts of Kevin.

Kevin was murdered on September 4, 2016, as his online and cell activities appeared to have stopped since that day.

They found that only one person seemed to stop contacting him since September 4 suspiciously. It belonged to a woman, Laquinta Renee Johnson. 

The officer also found that she lived across the street from where officers found Kevin’s missing car.

However, the most convincing evidence was that they could establish that Laquinta had contacted Richard Gaines, her brother, on the morning of the murder. 

Richard was a recorded gang member with a past of weapon-related convictions.

Officers also found that Richard had been arrested on September 12, 2016, for possessing a .45 caliber weapon after consenting to an automatic car check. 

Where is Laquinta Johnson now?

Laquinta was brought in for questioning on September 26, 2019, and at the beginning, she stated that she knew nothing about the homicide. 

However, she broke down and confessed to the homicide when the investigators showed evidence of her brother being captured with the murder weapon.

Laquinta already had a prolonged criminal history, with charges of robbery, unlawful use of a vehicle, and assault of a family member. 

She was sentenced to 45 years in prison after she admitted to the first-degree murder of Kevin. 

According to the official court records, she is serving her punishment at the Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, Texas. 

Her inmate records state her projected release date is May 2065, while she will be eligible for parole in November 2024.
