The former soccer player from Malaga, Sergio Contreras, better known as Koke, was the alleged leader of a drug gang.

At least that was the conclusion of the Civil Guard after several weeks of investigation that culminated in his arrest in November 2019.

Former La Liga star accused of drug trafficking left prison in 2021 after paying a bail of 15,000 euros.

He would have to sit down on Monday, March 27, 2023, in the Provincial Court of Malaga bench to answer the alleged network dedicated to the distribution of marijuana.

The prosecution requests for him a sentence of 16 years in prison and a fine of 15 million euros, as he is being investigated for a crime against the public health of substances that do cause serious harm to health.

He will not be the only one sitting on the bench, although he is the main defendant in the open macro-cause due to the so-called ‘Operation Linked.’

There are 14 other people accused of crimes against public health, including one of the ex-soccer player’s brothers and his sentimental partner.

For the Public Ministry, all of them formed a criminal plot that was dedicated to buying large quantities of marijuana. 

They allegedly vacuum-packed it and delivered it to foreign carriers for trucking to different European countries. They started from different points in Andalusia, such as Los Morales.

The investigation of the Armed Institute, carried out by the agents of the Organized Crime and Anti-Drug Team (EDOA), carried out numerous surveillance, telephone interventions, and follow-ups and even placed geolocation mechanisms in the suspects’ vehicles. 

According to the prosecutor, they formed a drug trafficking organization whose leader was Koke. The investigators consider him the boss of the gang.

The Public Ministry indicates that below Koke was his lieutenant, who has yet to be located by the Civil Guard and other members in charge of various tasks.

There were those in charge of offering financial support to the gang, the suppliers of the narcotic substances, those who rented the cars, those who packaged the drugs, and those who transported them.

Within that criminal organization, supposedly, was the wife of an ex-soccer player.

As the case sums up, it is explained that the woman was in charge of custody and delivery of the money from the illegal activity, taking charge of the payment and collection from the suppliers.

As for Koke’s brother detained in operation, the prosecutor assures that he was carrying out tasks of transporting the narcotic substance.

The transports that the Prosecutor’s Office blames on the Koke gang, one stands out in which 206,920 kilos of marijuana and almost a kilo of cocaine were hidden among a shipment of garlic.

The Prosecutor’s Office considers that the 15 defendants in this macro-cause are responsible for a crime against public health.

The main defendant, the former soccer player from Malaga, requested that he be sentenced, in addition to 16 years in prison, to pay a fine of 15 million euros.
