Lakshmin Thiagarajan, Director and Tech Specialist

Lakshmin Thiagarajan

We welcome Lakshmin Thiagarajan for having an interview with us. He is Director, Engineering Design and Certification at SOLiD. Lakshmin is intrinsically motivated individual and believes that every day is another learning opportunity to improve upon the previous day.

Tell us about yourself?

Coming with a strong mathematical and highly technical background has helped me pay it forward to my industry peers by breaking things down in the most fundamental manner possible. Having clocked over a million air miles in the last 8 years of my professional career has helped me see and experience different technologies and business aspects around the world, but more importantly experience and enjoy assimilating different cultures even if has been evanescent. I don’t believe any challenge is insurmountable and it’s important to enjoy the problem solving as well. I am an avid fan of outdoor activities in general and enjoy tinkering with electronics when indoors.

What makes your organization different than your competitors?

Working at SOLiD has been a pivotal influence for me in my career as I took a role that I had no experience with before. SOLiD has provided me the latitude to build one of the strongest educational programs in the DAS industry through our certification programs. The transparency of the product, the technical know-how of the core members and the integrity of the product is what makes us stand out. When I started, the strong technical culture espoused everything a telecommunications hardware OEM should be in order to make networks work seamlessly. The out of box and lifetime failure rate of the product is the lowest in the industry and this combined with the fact that SOLiD builds one of the most power efficient amplifiers for the industry truly sets us apart.

How much potential market share can you achieve in the next 3 years?

While we are consistently among the top 3 OEM of choice for vendors in North America, we continue to strive to be the best in class. We believe our strong tenet and robust product line will certainly help us get to the top of the pile.

What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read?

I am trying to get more into the habit of reading, but if I were to pick one it would be, A brief history of time by Stephen Hawking.

What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?

The best thing I have ever spent money on was the one-way ticket to the other side of the world after I turned 21 to go to grad school, with no idea of what I was getting in to or what to expect. I had to figure out how to pack up my whole life in 2 suitcases as that was what the airline allowed!

The worst purchase continues to be choosing to buy lottery tickets after being well aware of the odds. In fact, probability is still one of my favorite topics.

What takes up too much of your time?

Trying to perfect everything I get my hands on; a presentation, an email, a new submission, sometimes more than it should or maybe its worth.

What three pieces of advice would you give to college students/new startup business owners who want to become entrepreneurs?

(a) Seek a mentor that cares unconditionally about you/your cause, don’t ever leave their side

(b) Work in the real world, get practical knowledge before you pick a course or program to study

(c) Be selfish, put yourself first before anyone else when making decisions

Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?

Leonardo da Vinci

Tell us about something you are proud of – about your greatest challenge.

My greatest challenge continues to be able to understand something well enough to teach or educate someone who doesn’t know it. I am most proud when the person being taught understands it as well as I have, or better.

How people should connect with you?

I am easy to approach and connect. Although I don’t have a big social media presence, I am on LinkedIn!
