It was known that her parents’ names were Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Hickey. Her parents welcomed three children into their family, and Mariah was the youngest of them. 

At the age of 18 years, she started building her career in singing. In 1988, she signed a deal with Columbia Records.

His occupation was found to be that he was working for them as an aeronautical engineer. Her paternal grandfather was previously named Nuñez but later, he changed it to Carey as it sounded more American/Eurocentric. 

The names at that time were usually changed as people were mostly facing Racism. In her initial career, Racism was something her parents were often dealing with. 

Her mother and father are of Irish descent, and during their reunion, they were dealt with Racism.

When did Mariah Carey’s parents meet?

According to sources, Mariah’s parents met each other in 1960, and they both felt attraction for each other. In the same year, they fell in love, and later they decided to get married.

Mariah’s maternal grandmother was against the marriage of her daughter to Mariah’s father, but the couple married each other. Patricia Hickey ignored her mother’s advice to marry Alfred.

During the Oprah Winfrey show, Mariah’s mother, Patricia, recalled her memories of the time when she was marrying her husband. She said, “I was in love with him and I just felt that it was the right thing to do.”

Mariah also recalled her memories and said that her father was identified as a Black man, and she said that people wouldn’t ask her dad whether Mariah was her daughter. 

She also said that people always looked at them when they were in public. She added, “As a little girl, I had blonde colored hair, and they’d look at me, look at him, and be disgusted. I understand people want to hold on to their roots. But for me, I was a complete nonentity because of it.”

She concluded, “Maybe that was part of my drive to succeed. I’ll become accepted.”
