Minal Mehta is a passionate and versatile fashion designer from India. At present, She owns her fashion clothing brand called “‘Mila by Minal’ which receiving an immense amount of customers all around the world. Minal Mehta provides high-quality clothing and aims to enrich the lives of the people involved.
Tell us about yourself?
Born and raised in India, I am an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management (IIM, Ahmedabad) and a graduate of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT, New Delhi) the most prestigious Universities in India. I have worked in the global fashion industry for little over 10 years where I have headed design teams and was involved in expanding the fashion business. The fashion industry is dominated by fast fashion, and I felt the need to preserve traditional artisanal crafts that I grew up around hence, Mila by Minal was born.
What makes your organization different than your competitors?
We are a conscious fashion label for women that support the local network of fair waged artisans and handcraftsmen providing them with economic opportunities for their welfare. We bring the traditional age-old techniques in a contemporary style offering our clients our heritage and history that they can wear with style.
How much potential market share can you achieve in the next 3 years?
Considering the tough and competitive market conditions, we are hopeful and confident to achieve 2-3% of the market share in the coming years.
What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read?
I am always in for reading non-fiction, but one fiction that stands out to me is Dan Brown’s, Da Vinci Code.
What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?
Best purchase is where I can make memories with my family and loved ones, so that will be on holidays and trips. I don’t make bad purchases.
What takes up too much of your time?
Being in the early stage of fashion business requires focus and consistency. Getting my creative juices flowing in every direction at work is what occupies me the most.
What three pieces of advice would you give to college students/new startup business owners who want to become entrepreneurs?
- Get your hand dirty only when you are passionate about something. PASSION with purpose is the key.
- Innovate, innovate, innovate – identify the need and innovate
- Be relevant to your audience.
- Customer feedback.
- Positive mindset – this is what gets you through the tough times.
Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?
I have to say, my father, he started from scratch and accomplished what he has today.
He maintained a fine balance between work and family and now supports multiple charities that work towards enriching people’ s lives. There is so much to learn from him.
Tell us about something you are proud of – about your greatest challenge.
I am very proud of the education that I have. It is so difficult to make it to the top universities in India given there is so much population and everyone wants to be there so bad.
