Please tell us a little about your background and your journey.
In 1999 while finishing my MBA, I started a company on the side and managed to make my first million in the next two years. In 2002, I founded PageTraffic, an internet marketing company that has since grown to an 80-person firm with offices across India and the US.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
The Internet really started exploding when I was doing my MBA. After Google was launched and the initial buzz was created, the search landscape started changing very fast. I started reading, testing and implementing a lot of SEO theories and learning. So while doing my MBA, my first digital marketing company was born! Soon I started receiving SEO queries from companies around the world. By the time I graduated, I was already developing and managing websites for many clients. And the money was good. So, launching the company and expanding on what I was already doing was a no-brainer.
How much potential market share can you achieve in the next 3 years?
With so many players in the market, competition has definitely increased. But in the end, it’s the quality of work and your experience that wins. Over the last few months, we have launched some interesting offerings and our new digital marketing software is just around the corner. With all those exciting offerings and time tested experience of ours I am sure we are going to grab at least 20% more shares.
What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read?
It’s not just one book I could mention but a few which influenced me the most:
- Rich dad, poor dad
- Good to great
- The E-Myth Revisited
- Thinking fast and slow
Do you feel you have achieved everything you’ve ever wanted in life?
The motto of life should be constant progress and improvement. I am in constant search for knowledge. I used to be forever hungry for new gadgets, technology and experiences. But not anymore. Most of all I am at a stage of life where I think I have to give back to society a lot. So for me, I am an underachiever right now. I have been involved with charitable work and NGOs but I think at the place I am, I should be doing more.
What are the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?
Worst would be my Xbox, which I have barely used and best would be my IPad Pro 12.9 inch. It has made my life really easy. I can now work from anywhere without being concerned about battery or laptop weight.
If there was one thing you have to give up to get to an even better place than you are now, what would it be?
It’s a tough one! But I think it would be micromanaging a few parts of my business. Being an obsessed SEO guy which I have been for over 18 years, all aspects of SEO work which we deliver to clients matters to me a lot. I think maybe I need to loosen up a bit but again I think that’s our core strength and the main reason for the success, me being in the thick of the SEO world. For now, we are automating most of the repetitive tasks so that it helps us focus more on the creative part of the process which many digital agencies miss.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
My work has been my hobby! So I spend lots of my spare time reading about SEO and otherwise also reading lots of nonfictional books.
What’s the most courageous thing you’ve done in your life?
For me, it would be river rafting on some very bad rapids and taking a plunge from 80 meters into river Ganges.
What advice would you give to your younger self and to your fans who are reading this interview?
If you can think about it, you can achieve it. Give everything your best shot. And most importantly don’t wait for the perfect moment. Take the moment and make it perfect.
Also always be honest to yourself and uphold your values no matter how bad the situation is.
