We conducted an exclusive interview with Rong Xin, Who is Co-founder of Explorer Junior. Find out more about her journey and success story.
Tell us about yourself?
My name is Rong Xin and I am from Singapore. I am an educator, entrepreneur and doer at Explorer Junior, a startup that aims to nurture curious young minds.
What gets you up in the morning?
Breakfast by my mum. 🙂
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
We believe that every child is a curious explorer; yet the one-size-fits-all, outcome driven, education system does not optimize the individual’s potential. And that’s how our journey begins. We set out to research, design and develop a set of pedagogy to nurture the curiosity and creativity of every child that comes through our door, enabling them to build confidence and discover their unique interests!
What’s your company’s goals?
We want to be the leading global educational institution that allows children to explore in creative and intelligent ways. One of the short term goals currently is to establish ourselves in our first overseas venture in Indonesia.
How do you market your business? How are people aware of your business?
We currently focus our marketing efforts on digital marketing – social media as well as SEO optimization of our website for our B2C market. As for B2B, we rely more on building strong relationships and word of mouth for our customers acquisition.
What was the last book you read for fun?
It’s actually a Japanese novel written by Keigo Higashino – Miracles of the Namiya General Store. I read the Chinese Mandarin version and it’s a mystery thriller revolving a run-of-the-mill general store that becomes a portal through time.
What made you choose this type of business?
I always believe in education and technology as vehicles for development in the 21st century and I wasn’t happy with how we were learning in schools. So when my friends approached me to join them into this venture, I took the plunge immediately.
What do you do when you’re not at work?
I’ll be reading, writing, Netflix-ing, spending time with family, playing badminton.
Do you plan to compete in the global marketplace? If yes, how? If no, why not?
We are taking steps to venture into new markets currently, but we are starting in the region first. The plan is to expand into the neighboring countries – Jakarta, Bangkok etc. We will also be leveraging on technology to facilitate this growth in terms of operations and training.
What changes can you make that will change everything?
To bring in new investors & new blood to the company. We are in the midst of scaling the business and are looking for funds and talents to help us bring the company to the next level. Opening ourselves up to investors and hiring new talents will definitely change the game with funds and new perspectives coming in.
How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted on how you conduct business?
Many ways. First, technology and internet makes this world extremely connected and this means we get to scout talents and hire on a global scale. This also means that information are readily available and we need to compete with this explosion of free content readily available in the marketplace. We are lucky that we are a generation who grew up with technology in our lives and I am a firm believer that it is more of a boon than bane. We leverage on cloud-based systems to help us in our day to day operations, in marketing, CRM etc. We are also looking at developing our own solutions to enable and empower instructors or parents worldwide to adopt our learning methodologies. In other words, I think technology brings a gateway of opportunities.
