Indonesian singer Putri Ariani, then 17 years old, became an overnight sensation after her Tuesday local time audition on America’s Got Talent (AGT) earned her the coveted Golden Buzzer from none other than Simon Cowell and went viral worldwide.

Born early in December 2005 due to issues her mother experienced, Riau provincial native Putri was soon diagnosed with blindness.

The aspiring singer/pianist added a notch to her growing musical career by refusing to be limited by her disability and giving a riveting performance during the reality show’s televised auditions.

People’s perception of me as a blind person rather than a musician is my greatest obstacle. Putri added, “I feel like a superstar when I sing,” just before she sang on AGT.

In response to a question posed by the panel of judges, she declared. That her aspiration was to “be the biggest diva in the world like Whitney Houston and to win a Grammy award.”

She desired to attend New York’s illustrious Juilliard School of Performing Arts for her undergraduate studies.

America’s Got Talent (AGT) judge’s remarks on her performance

The judges and audience then gave Putri a standing ovation as she sang her song, “Loneliness.”

In the second performance, Putri again wowed the audience with her rendition of “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” by Elton John.

“You’re only 17 years old.” You have a unique and great voice, and you also write music,” stated the legendary Simon Cowell. 

Moreover, he remarked that she gave a “really, really good” audition. After telling Putri, “You have a kind of a glow about you,” the judge hit the Golden Buzzer and advanced Putri to the championship match.

Cowell told Putri, “You are, I think, one of the best singers we’ve ever had on our show.” When questioned about his Golden Buzzer choice, he said, “Because she’s brilliant.”

On Wednesday, a video clip of Putri’s audition quickly went viral, trending on Twitter and earning praise from U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Sung Kim.

Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno also gushed about Putri’s performance, stating that she had brought honor to Indonesia.

Putri’s first time performing on a global stage was during her audition for America’s Got Talent.

When she was only eight years old, she won the Indonesian version of the program in 2014. 

Putri gave a performance at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Asian Para Games four years later.
