Vera Liddell, a school teacher, was accused of stealing chicken wings in Illinois worth $1.5 million dollars.

The Harvey School District in Chicago, Illinois, was in for a shock when they discovered their food service director, Vera Liddell, was the mastermind behind a massive food theft operation.

Liddell, who had worked for the Harvey School District for over a decade, was responsible for ordering food for the district.

However, court documents reveal that she took advantage of her position, ordering over 11,000 cases of chicken wings and then picking them up in a district cargo van during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite students learning remotely, the district continued to provide meals for parents to pick up. It wasn’t until a mid-year audit was conducted that school officials realized something was amiss.

The district was over its annual food service budget by a whopping $300,000, a red flag that prompted further investigation.

The food item was never served to students as it contained bones.

As the case was investigated by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, employees of the district’s food provider, Gordon Food Service, revealed that they were all familiar with Liddell and the massive amounts of chicken wings she would purchase.

Liddell was arrested and charged with theft, with a bond set at $150,000. She is currently in custody at the Cook County Jail, facing the consequences of her actions.

The Harvey School District has been left reeling from the shock of this massive theft, and the students and families they serve will surely be impacted by the lack of funding for their food services.
