Who was Harry Belafonte third wife?

Harry Belafonte, the iconic singer and civil rights activist, tied the knot with Pamela Frank, a renowned photographer, in 2008.

The couple remained married for 15 years until Belafonte’s death in 2023.

Though Frank gained media attention as Belafonte’s wife, she is widely recognized for her distinguished career in photography.

Despite her marriage to a high-profile figure, Frank has maintained a relatively low-key lifestyle, preferring to remain out of the limelight.

The couple did attend several public events together, including the NAACP Image Awards in 2013 and the opening night of Michael Moore on Broadway in 2017.

Frank, who has two children, Sarah and Lindsey, from a previous relationship stood by Belafonte’s side during some of his most significant moments including his reception of the National Order of the Legion of Honour from the French government in 2021.

The first wife of Harry, Marguerite Belafonte

Harry Belafonte’s first marriage was to Marguerite (née Byrd) whom he met in 1944 while serving in the Navy in Virginia.

Despite their social class differences, they married in 1948 and had two daughters, Adrienne, and Shari Belafonte.

However, their marriage fell apart when Belafonte met dancer Julie Robinson on the set of the 1954 movie Carmen Jones, and they separated while Marguerite was pregnant with Shari.

Marguerite found love letters from Robinson to Belafonte soon after giving birth to Shari, and their divorce followed.

Marguerite had her own career before, during and after her marriage to Belafonte.

She acted for a brief period and studied at the Sorbonne and the University of Heidelberg, but she found the show-business world shallow and false, unlike Belafonte.

Their daughter, Adrienne, described their differences and motivations, with Marguerite coming from a family striving to be in the upper echelon of Black society and eventually into the middle echelon of White society.

Harry married his co-star, Julie Robinson

Following his divorce from Marguerite, Belafonte got married to his fellow co-star in the film Carmen Jones, Julie Robinson, in 1957.

The couple welcomed two children together, named Gina and David.

At the time of their meeting, Robinson was dating Marlon Brando, but soon she fell in love with Belafonte and started writing love letters to him.

Unfortunately, Marguerite discovered them, leading to the end of her marriage with Belafonte.

Belafonte tried to keep his divorce and marriage to Robinson secret while filming Island in the Sun in 1957, but the news became public eventually.

Interestingly, Marguerite and Robinson became good friends over the years, and their children from Belafonte’s second marriage were reportedly close to those of his first marriage.

After 47 years of marriage, Belafonte and Robinson got divorced in 2004 when the singer was 77 years old.

In his memoir, My Song: A Memoir published in 2011, he wrote about his second marriage, saying that he always felt angry and trapped due to various reasons, including poverty, his mother, and his responsibility for the global poor.

While Harry Belafonte’s first marriage ended in divorce, his second marriage lasted for 47 years, leaving some to wonder, was Harry Belafonte married at the time of his death?
